acsp sleep mode in mandrake 10.1

I keep on hearing about linux being up for years on end. I am wondering if there is a way to put linux to sleep (like in windows) where it uses the power management capability of the motherboard/cpu to lower voltage (energy star?)

I am wondering more from a heat and power usage. I have not seen any option on my system, and was wondering if there is an addtional plugin to do this?

Some research on the following would help answer some of your ?'s

ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface)

DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling)
