I am just a newbie (Exactly installed mandrake 10 hours ago ! ! ! ) and I have so many problems with my new OS ! ! !
The most important problems are :
1- My modem is not listed in hardware list. Is that mean it is a win modem ??? My modem is "connexant" and I have got a driver ( a generic rpm for hsfmodem ) from linuxant.com but it didnt work. Installed properly but just didnt work. How can I force Linux to detect my modem ????
2- I have a Digital Still Camera with USB cable. When I plug it into linux nothing happens ! ! ! The "USB Viewer" software detect it as a mass storage and all its setting are correct ( such as name/data speed/manufacturer/ etc . . .) but I can not find the contents of it.
How exactly **( I am a newbie )** can I mount it ? ? ?
create a mount directory (/mnt/camera) and then mount it:
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera
It may not be /dev/sda1 so if that doesn't work you'll have to check by using this command:
tail /var/log/messages
That will tell you some stuff that you don't understand but in there you'll see something like sda1 or sdb1 or sdd1 or whatever. That's where you can find your camera.
After that, check out that /mnt/camera directory.

That works.
Is there any way to make this procedure automatic ? ? ?
I heard some about <fstab> or something like that is that correct ?
again thanks
At the command line (ill use nano) chose your fav text editor and edit
/etc/fstab
(if u use nano) type
nano -w /etc/fstab
add a line somwhere
/dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto noauto,user 0,0
and then quit.
to mount it type
mount /mnt/camera
hope this helps

You might be able to get hotplug to make it automatically mount it or you could add an icon to your workspace with the mount command and double-click when you plug it in I guess. That's probably the easiest if you ask me!
One thing to remember is that if you plug in a different USB storage device like a MP3 player, it too will be /dev/sda1. The next device, like your camera, would automatically become /dev/sda2 and so on. No big deal but it won't differentiate for you. That's your job.
