8.2 locks up on boot

Hi:

I am new to Linux. I have just installed Mandrake 8.2 on a system with two drives. The system is a wiped Windows box, not dual OS. The drives are jumpered to master and slave.

It starts to boot but freezes up where it goes for the scsi0 device. It says Host Adapter Bios disabled. Using default scsi parameters. And then lists the parameters and then locks up.

I'm trying to come over from Windows, but so far I'm quite discouraged.

not really an answer to your problem, but why are you using MDK8.2? support has been long gone history for that version & improvemtns are many since then. before wrestling with 8.2 problems (which is over 2 years old) i'd suggest installing MDK10.0, or at the very least, 9.2. with 10.0 & the 2.6 kernel, you don't even need scsi emulation any more.

just MHO........

Have the disks

Well, mainly because I have the disks. How's that for a good reason? I also have Mandrake 9 disks, FreeBSD 4.2 and Disk 2 of the Simpson's third season. The one with Marge on it.

well, you can screw around in the BIOS with disabling & configuring host adapters (here's a LINK as to how), then edit your lilo.conf file in the append= line to use scsi emulation for any/all IDE drives.

or, you can do what i suggested earlier & use a more current version of MDK & not have to worry about all that hassle.

or, maybe you can pop in that Simpson's CD & get Marge to configure things properly for you, then ask Homer for a six pack of Duff to help ease your headaches with all the other problems you'll probably be facing by using such an outdated distro/kernel.
