2009.1 KDE apps printing commands hang up

When I print from within KMail or KWrite or Okular I find that the application hangs, with no printer activity.

Does anyone on this forum have any ideas about this phenomenon? The same thing does not happen with Open Office, Firefox or XPDF or simple command line lpr instructions or shell scripts issuing print instructions.

I should be interested to know whether this type of thing has been observed by other users of the 2009.1 KDE4 desktop.

With earlier versions of KDE this never happened, to my knowledge.

Any suggested causes of this misbehaviour on the part of KDE apps vis-a-vis printing will be most welcome.

cheers
Duncan

Yes this happens to me too, when printing from okular and kate.

I'm interested to find out why and how, too.

KDE Printing dialog very long delay

Hi,

I have the same problem. It is not that it hangs, it simply takes ages (several minutes, even 15minutes) to show the printer applet/window.
It only happens with pure KDE apps: kontakt, okular, kate, gwenview...

I don't know how to look for a solution. What is the service that KDE calls for printing/ printing dialog?

On GTK apps this does not happen. I run Kubuntu Jaunty.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

just found the problem.

It is documented on this bugs (are the same):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...nt/+bug/223776

http://qt.nokia.com/developer/task-t...ntry&id=232664

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=179955

Some people solve it with "Browsing Off" on cupsd.conf - I had it already like that
Others having in /etc/hosts the computer name for localhost 127.0.0.1

In my case it is that I have an ipp remote printer (network printer) not properly configured and offline / unreachable.

Just in case it helps somebody else.

Cheers
