The Quiet People

I was messing around with the data that you get when you click on the members button. Assuming that I manipulated the searches correctly, I calculated that we have 88,127 members of whom 43429 have zero posts.

My guess is that these people join to use the search button, find what they are looking for, and quietly go away.

Not all of them. We have many members sign up so they can subscribe to threads, get mail notification and so on. So many of these members that have 0 replies not only come to just search but keep using the search and find their answers, never needing to post a question and so on.

You'd be suprised of the amount that never speak up but login daily or on a weekly basis.

I wouldn't have the exact numbers, but maybe Jeremy in his spare time will post some interesting numbers up.

Cheers.

when i first joined this forum i didnt post for quite a long time, i just enjoyed reading up. At the time i didnt really feel all that knowledgable in the wide world of Linux, so i wouldnt have wanted to start reeling off bad advice

When anybody ever asks me about good resource sites (for almost any computer related issues) i nearly always point them to LQ, even if they dont run Linux

I always say "Google has all the answers for everything" but LQ is getting closer to that

although, 90,000 members, geez thats going up at a scary rate

I would be interested in seeing how many people are "regulars" out of those 90,000.

Like do we have say 400 people that use this all the time and then say like 1500 that use it every now and then.....

Not dissing this place at all.....I just really have no idea how many regulars we have.

Hmm... Interesting

Peace,
Whitehat

I was a quite member for a few months after registering. Not because I found all the answers but because i had a dialup connection.

I had registered in anticipation of getting the broadband but i got it only in december and so i have been a regular since.

Anyways, most of the searches on google turn up threads at LQ.

I'm quiet =) Most questions I have have been answered or will soon be, plus it's more of an educational thing.

I can quite understand their approach. Sometimes I logon and browse without posting... rare, but it does happen.

Same here. I've searched, read and found what I want most of the time. I only recently just registered so i could ask a couple of questions and post a couple of distro reviews (I've tried so many over the past few months).

i can see it both ways:

quiet: not posting redundant questions
quiet: not giving back with help where possible

so it has its upside and its downside
