Suggestion for indicating whether forums have new posts

I noticed on the forums page that Linux Forums on LinuxQuestions.org that contain new posts have an icon with a tux penguin with a question mark and those that don't have new posts have an icon with a tux penguin without that question mark. Wouldn't it make more sense to just have an icon for one or the other? That way users and guests can quickly see which forums have new posts (an icon present would indicate new posts or not...you choose). They wouldn't see an tux on each forum and have to look for a question mark. They would just see a tux or not see a tux.

I don't know if this is the right word but it seems like the way things are now is redundant. Thank you for maintaining the LinuxQuestions forum. It has helped me.

Edit:
I could have worded this more clearly. I meant the forums page (https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/). The bottom line is my suggestion is to make forums with new posts have an tux icon and the forums that don't have none or the other way around.

Never noticed that.

For me if I view a forum, the new posts are bold text.

Further, the Quick Links menu allows you to View Latest Posts.

I see the penguin with and without the question mark. Somewhat neat, but there are certain sub-forums I never visit. I'm ok with the way it's done now, but can see it may be a faster view this other way.

The forums page also displays the date of the latest post.

I didn't take that into account. I still think changing the icons displayed would make things much more user-friendly.

And, you're the elusive one with that quote: "If it's not backed up to external media, it's not backed up." Now, I know who said it.

I would compare the way things are now to marking a quiz a certain way. Imagine having a symbol for wrong answers (say, an "x") and one for right answers (say a "check"). Why not just have a mark for wrong answers and no mark for right answers? That way the person reviewing the results just has one thing to look for ("x" for wrong answers).
