Suggest that conversations should auto-close after some period of time

But, people around here sometimes do. They reply, as they did today, to a thread that was started ten years ago.

I suggest that, after a reasonable period of time, threads should be automatically locked so that they cannot be added to.

In principle, it's a reasonable idea, but sometimes there is actually new information to provide (e.g. bugs resolved in new releases), so what would you class as a "reasonable period of time"?

Perhaps anyone wanting to post to an "old" thread can do so only after applying to a moderator for permission.

I know it may be an exception, but the Armstrong numbers thread (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...amming-466789/) was resurrected after 11 years and it has been fascinating to see the responses since then.

Please do a search on this topic, it's been discussed at length previously. It's not something we plan to do at this time.

SundialSVCs, have you forgotten that this is at least the third thread you've started on this over the last year or two?

And that bothers you for some reason?

Yes, sorry, I was feeling a bit cranky at seeing this topic come up yet again. What I should have said was:

Posting to old threads is not a problem, off-topic posts are the problem regardless of thread age.
