I have not blocked anything in the browser. It does not hurt me if I can not post smilies but other options like Bold, Italics are useful.
I also checked preferences but there is nothing that says it blocked the options.
Anyhow I can still ask questions and help other members here without smilies as well. But I would have liked to use highlighting and text formating options.
If you use noscript, or have javascript blocked in your security sessions, you'll have to add linuxquestions and googleapis to your whitelist.

For me - forbidding linuxquestions produces the same symptoms you report. Allowing LQ but forbidding googleapis disables much of the top row of the toolbar.

Yeah I am behind a transparent proxy. It runs RHEL4 and squid. Can that be an issue? Its transparent though.

I do not use noscript. I also have javascript enabled. May be, as suggested by Jeremy, it could be due to the fact that I am behind a transparent proxy. If that is the issue I would like to hear about the solutions. Any other members who visit LQ from behind the proxy and have same problem?

The proxy would only be an issue if it's incorrectly configured or is explicitly blocking some content.

It is not blocking any content as such. Just that it is used to block the messaging and mailing sites and porn content. Nothing more.
If you could put more light on incorrect configuration?

Why is googleapis providing this content anyway? That seems to be a recent change, and google is a site that I view with increasing suspicion - not because of how they behave, but because of the power they are gaining; they keep logs of everything and they have already lost at least one lawsuit that forced them to turn their records over to the media cartel.

I, for one, am unwilling to whitelist any google destination. In fact, I have blacklisted google-analytics, googleadservices, and googlesyndication. But here on LQ, I am forced to allow googleapis to run if I want to post a new thread or quote from another post.

We're taking advantage of the hosted YUI. We used to use Yahoo for this, but unfortunately they do not support SSL at this time. It's possible for us to revert to hosting the files ourselves, but as many sites use the hosted option, the files are already cached for most visitors coming to LQ... mean pages appear to load much faster.

Yeah I guess this could be a issue with my squid. Here at another site that I have with me, the smilies work
I will have to look into it.
one questions though. I have not explicitly denied anything at the other site but I would like to know what are the links that provide these features so that if anyone of these are blocked I will allow it

Ok. Got it now. It is working . One link of googleapis was getting blocked due to the keyword matching. Now everything seems to be fine.
