When identifying spam/advertising posts, is it helpful to comment in the thread in addition to reporting it?
I can see value in letting others know it has been reported...but I’ve also seen cases where the original post got removed, but the follow ups were still there (for a while)
Which makes less work for the moderators...report and comment, or just report?
I too would be interested to learn if there is any preference. Up until now, I've generally just reported without adding a post, unless it's one of those cut and paste spam threads where folk might actually think that it's a legitimate question.
Distribution: Currently: OpenMandriva. Previously: openSUSE, PCLinuxOS, CentOS, among others over the years.

I think it's better to both report it and post to say it has been reported, as I've seen where I've already reported it without posting to say I have reported it, and someone else has done both anyway - this adds more unnecessary reports to the report list.
I've also seen others reply to both threads when you have a dupe and no-one to has posted to say it's a dupe thread. So I do the same in that situation as well.
I will typically post a one-liner saying "Spam/reported" so that others don't waste their time reporting it too. That way, the mods don't have to wade through 100 reports of the same thread.

They've mentioned in previous threads that we don't need to worry about that. Their UI handles multiple reports for the same post just fine.

If the spam is the first post and will result in the thread being removed, noting that you reported it is fine but not necessary. If it's not the first post and the thread will not be removed, it's highly preferable that you not respond/quote. We have tools to automatically clean up spam but these do not remove responses, which is manual.
