First of all, wrong forum. Its not a question about Linux but about this site so its been moved to Website Questions and Suggestions.

Second, this has been asked many many times before. A search in this forum would most likely bring up the answers.

But for a quick answer, when this site was started, there weren't really any free BB forum type boards around. Getting vBulletin was really the only option at the time. And its been pretty much hacked to death by Jeremy, he could probably call this vJeremyBoard...

Regards.

Actually one thing I don't like about phpbb is the default themes and most used on other sites seem to be too bubbly and cartoon like looking.. Just my opinion though.

technowax,

That's quite a general statement, but if you have a specific feature that you think LQ is missing feel free to post it.

I don't think that is feasible now at this time with the database as large as it is, the customization along with a migration as well. Your the first and only member to ever ask for this out of 70k plus, I think you'll just have to deal with using vBulletin for this site.

Okey. Ill live with it its the best linux site arround as it is.

( Btw, the migration would take under a day, phpbb have conversion tools, and the method is easy, just rename table names, etc )

I dont know how much you have used phpBB or vbulletin and im not trying to be haisty but Vbulletin is well coded and is currently the best forum software out there. If you havnt noticed on phpBBs site if you do a search 99% of the time it cant handle the queries due to such a large amount of posts. Vbulletin is designed to handle vast amounts of users posts threads etc phpBB is getting there i do have to had it to them but i am with some of the other memebers phpBB looks to bubbly looking vbulletin looks more professional looking. Plus alot of the fetures in vbulletin, phpBB hasnt even thought of yet. But i do have to hand it to phpBB that they are just starting out and they are making a good go at it. For FREE bulletin boards phpBB is the way to go. For the best overall board i would have to say vbulletin.

just my 2 cents.

Hey, if you want to get into a message board war then Invision Board is the fastest and much better than phpBB, but as it looks the entire linuxquestions.org is basicly one vB. I am sure jeremy doesn't want to re-write the entire website just to change to another message board and I don't blame him one bit.

I would cry if I came to this site one day and it looked completly different. I really like the way it looks. I just had a great idea though. We can have a show called "Trading Websites" like that show Trading Spaces and we'll let slashdot overhaul lq and lq overhaul slashdot!
