It leads to a situation when a person (even with completely good intentions) must weigh each word for fear of unintentionally offending somebody.

To me it has everything to do with political correctness. There is no question that calling someone else 'retarded' or something similar is offensive, but I can call myself whatever I want [well, swear words are not allowed on LQ], and unless you are motivated by PC, I find it really difficult to understand why YOU would find it offensive.
To me it's all about morality & ethics. Not PC! And yes, one should weigh their speech both written word & spoken. Sure, we all stumble but hopefully do not fall to far.

It may not be agreed upon by all but the form we are discussing is at another person's/group of people's expense. Even though implied but harmful when used in the form that has been discussed.

I think we are talking about it on two different platforms. Again, for me it would be the issue of ethics/morality if I was did something to somebody else, not myself (ie. calling somebody else names)

It might sometimes be the case that people use a word with good intentions (not knowing that it might offend somebody else), and most importantly the 'victim' group/individual doesn't find it harmful/offensive, because it isn't (as it is being used). There's no problem there at all, until some individual who usually doesn't even belong to the 'victim' group comes up with the idea that it IS offensive. For me it's creating unnecessary problems/divisions.

Something similar (well, not really) happened in the UK. I don't remember it in details, but The Archbishop of Canterbury stated the the Sharia Law is inevitable in the UK (in order not to discriminate British Muslims). It sparked some fiery debate dividing people. Finally, someone came up with a brilliant idea to actually ask the people in question that the issue concerns, ie. British Muslim religious leaders.
They responded that they didn't event want Sharia Law in the UK!

I'm closing this thread for what I hope are obvious reasons. At LQ we try to do our best to balance free speech and openness with fostering a friendly and welcoming environment for all. We'll continue to do that to the best of our abilities and welcome any constructive feedback on how we can accomplish this.
