I think we are talking about it on two different platforms. Again, for me it would be the issue of ethics/morality if I was did something to somebody else, not myself (ie. calling somebody else names)

It might sometimes be the case that people use a word with good intentions (not knowing that it might offend somebody else), and most importantly the 'victim' group/individual doesn't find it harmful/offensive, because it isn't (as it is being used). There's no problem there at all, until some individual who usually doesn't even belong to the 'victim' group comes up with the idea that it IS offensive. For me it's creating unnecessary problems/divisions.
Something similar (well, not really) happened in the UK. I don't remember it in details, but The Archbishop of Canterbury stated the the Sharia Law is inevitable in the UK (in order not to discriminate British Muslims). It sparked some fiery debate dividing people. Finally, someone came up with a brilliant idea to actually ask the people in question that the issue concerns, ie. British Muslim religious leaders.
They responded that they didn't event want Sharia Law in the UK!
