I still use yelp and other review sites to see where I might wish to dine at or stay at or buy from or purchase. We all know the reviews are flawed to some degree. When I see 98 % positive on a few thousand reviews I suspect it has a good chance I'll like it too.
However another point was raised back there a bit. If members are not providing answers to the original question on posts then please use the report feature. It helps us all if the technical forums provide quality threads.
I get helpful ratings on nothing but ironical remarks.
This tells me what? I don't know what to make of this discussion. If it is more convenient for the majority (yet to be determined), rename the link to something like 'like that post'. I do not care, as long as I am understood... How many people take note of this very discussion in the first place, and why not?
Do you prefer a dropdown menu for I
like
hate
reject
approve of
laughed about
can recommend
do not understand
learned something from
this post?
... then add a thorough analysis of each poster's performance to the profile... with tendencies and cross-referencing current events and trends...

Reason: bull. (added some bull, I mean).
clearly some folks see the Reputation points as hard currency.
get a grip on yourselves, it's just clueless folks getting a pat on the shoulders by other clueless folks: "well said mate, grab a beer!"...

I would like to add a few more things, given how silly this debate is getting;
I
agree with just for the hell of it
agree with it, as long as I get some points in return
agree because I've got nothing better to do with myself
approve of just for the sake of it
laughed about and then wet myself in the process
can recommend for the sake of posting
do not understand because I don't want to
learned something from nothing
On a serious note, personally I think half the problem is that some members like posting for the sake of posting/to increase their post count.
Personally, I joined LQ in 2009 and am still at less than 600 posts, because I try and only post when I feel I can honesty help someone (bar the non-technical forum). I don't believe in posting for the sake of posting (in the technical forums) and do not believe this is helpful to anyone here, let alone new members that just want some help with Linux, without the BS and politics.
OK, this post for the first part of, maybe be a exception to prove the point, that this site should be about helping as many people as possible, WITH their Linux/UNIX problems. Yes, ok, members should also be able to have some fun in the non-technical forum as well, guilty.
i click on Yes, not because i find this post helpful, but because i want to antagonize another poster who said that this post was wrong/stupid/pointless.

Does anyone want proof of what I said in post #35?? I give you proof, post #36!
And yes I did find that helpful (and clicked on "Yes" next to "Did you find this post helpful?"), not because it helps anyone here with their Linux/UNIX problems, but because it proves my point. Now can anyone give me some points for that?? No, no one, I'm crushed
