Hi, as a newbie, the main problem that I have is installing software that isn't in the repository. Mostly it is in a compressed format viz. tar.bz2 I get it extracted but don't know what to do about it from that stage. I think what would be very helpful is to have a newbie "walk through the installation process guided(ie."watched") by a guru so as to ascertain where the gaps are. As quite often those who are familiar with the process do not realize where the gape are. They will often assume some prior knowledge.

Well Benjoperstoenail, as you could have notice, there are not many interested people here for this guide.

As I said, maybe one day I'll do it myself, the best I can. And of course I was aware that what you have mentioned is one of the problems that newbies often have to face. At the moment I recommend that you search, search a lot.
