howto for this site

There does not seem to be any "help" or "howto" button on the site.

I got a message when I registered, went off to read some stuff before posting, and now cannot find out how to post a message to a particular group (which is what I most wanted to do). The quick fix is for someone to tell me how to send a message to a group I have just joined; the better fix is to provide some kind of _obvious_ help button or "help about this site" sticky.

If it already exists, well my apologies but it is not obvious enuough for this newcomer to your site.

River~~

What do you mean by "group"? You've managed to post a thread, so I don't understand what you're having difficulty with.

Edit: if you mean one of the "social groups", then you should find a link that says "Post New Discussion" at the bottom of the discussions list for a given group. Perhaps said link should be placed at the top, too (I'd also suggest fixing the capitalisation...).

If this isn't what you mean, please explain.

Really though, it doesn't seem like the OP had difficulty with that.

Hi. I'm a member of the group that River is referring to, and it does seem to be causing problems, especially in the matter of disappearing reply and help buttons.

The answer we were given was that, on joining, it is necessary to start a new thread before being able to reply to existing ones. As an existing member of LQ, I didn't have that problem, but I heard from another member of the group (not River) that on trying to reply to the "Welcome" message, she couldn't find a Reply button, nor could she invoke help. She started a new thread, and then was able to post replies.

I stumbled on River's post because I was going to ask the question(s):

Is it necessary for new members to start a thread before being able to reply to others? and if so, why? and is this something that pertains only to social groups? I don't remember having any problem, 'way back.

Thanks.

Edna

It is not.

You do need to post in the forums before being able to participate in the Social Groups or post to your LQ Blog.

Of these, I found the last 3/4 of this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...xQuestions_org
to be an excellent tour of the site's capabilities.

If anyone wants more, then perhaps look over the vBulletin docs I found here:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22vbulletin+docs%22
<understatment>Judging from the titles, I think some of these have more detail than most of us want </understatment>
