View Poll Results: do you agree? that hijacking posts is bad
I'm concerned that there are several users (usually newbies) out there who are hijacking posts.
This is bad because the post almost always stops in its tracks, and the original poster dosn't get his/her question answered.
The characteristic of the hijacking post is something like: "I can't get this to work... wah!! what do I do? I need help plz?" note that this also breaks the rules of good question asking.
perhaps there should be a sticky/ on the registration message that says something like "How to ask questions:
1) look in the man pages.
2) google.
3)search LQ.
4)start a new thread.
5) give as much detail as possible in your question, (and title) in a short and consise way.
6) be respectful and grateful. You do not have any rights to get an answer. It is a privilege to get answered.
the only exception I can think of is if your question is exactly like the one posted, you fixed one aspect of the problem and you need help for the the other aspects, or it is very very close to the same problem. And forget the cellphone language. It kills the post.
sorry if this is a bit rantish, I am just very concerned.

I somewhat agree, that I occasionally see a hijacked thread. I usually just make a subtle suggestion to the offender to post their own thread on the subject with some pertinent info. After that is done, I'm free to continue trying to help and post to the original poster. I personally don't feel it's a severe problem. If I see something very blatant, I just report it to the mods. These are all just my humble opinions, so take it with a grain of salt.
yeah... I guess I was a bit strong. thanks for pointing that out Peacedog.
I'll try to a bit more considerate of learners next time. hey, we were all learners once.
