Geographical distribution of LQ members

Good evening.

The discussions that I follow or recently contributed to inspire me to ask this question: Would it be possible to see a statistic about the geographical distribution of LQ members?

I always liked the pie-charts on sourceforge, but that is just one example. Although I am aware of the nebulous character of the location field in the user-details, perhaps you have already read this question or have even considered the possibility...

Thanks anyway.

Michael

i'd be mildly interested, too.

since the forum server can see the IPs anyway, it would be fairly simple to do that, based on IPs.
but anonymously of course!
in no way should the IPs and usernames be disclosed to the public.

I hope, you do. And I wished everybody did or could (for my connection is crappy enough without me using a proxy, for half of each month).

The question is not how the available data could help to produce a statistic. Wait, I have to see my original post again... Ah. No. I did put that quite well, AFAIS. To resume a little differently: I have no idea what will be needed to produce such a statistic but maybe, and if it is of interest to a considerable portion of the LQ staff and members, my idea is worth a note.

Otherwise, thanks anyway.

Most members leave the Location field blank. Add in the free form nature of the field and I don't think aggregating it would produce meaningful or interesting data. We don't do any real analytics on IP address. That said, our #1 geo has always been the USA. From there it's typically: Germany, UK, India, France and Canada.

And thank you for that, by the by. I consider that a positive thing and an indication of LQ's integrity.

Yes, although there tends to be some movement outside the top 1 or 2 spots.
