This may or may not help
but if you are using Firefox on a windows box
try installing the following Extensions
* No Script
* Dr Web Anti-Virus link checker

cheers

Turn off the Javascript and Java. Evil scripts are evil scripts, and you'll be surprised to see what they can do, even in Linux. No where near the damage as in Windowz, but still annoying, nevertheless. Basically, I turn mine on only for sites I fully trust that actually need it.

I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of my browser running someone else's little program that I've not had a chance to check out.

You wouldn't by any chance have any good examples of the "even in Linux" kind, would you?

"No Script" in Firefox is very handy
for instance on this page the following java scripts are running according to "No Script"
and are blocked on my system by "No-Script"

* google-analytics.com
* google syndication.com
* doubleclick.net

You can find No-Script here
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/

Give it a go and see if you still have problems

cheers

@floppywhooper

the yellow band in the bottom is annoying. even when i set it to hide after 3 secs of display it doesnot. my 'QuickLinks' in the LQ mainpage is not there even though i allowed scripts for LQ (its there in the other pages but). its handy but not cool is my review.

I think , possibly and I may be wrong - and therefore open to correction.....

But probably Jeremy is more concerned about whether the "No-Script" extension prevented the browser hi-jacks or not rather than the aethestics of the extension.This will help narrow down the cause of the problem.

It also works in Linux as well as windows BTW.

I hit the browser back button - should that give me the same ads? I've just tested it and it seems to work. So I've now got the page back that I was redirected from. What can I do with this? I'll do the following - screenshot, copy text, try to get html source (I'm not that clever at this bit). Any advice? Will have to close session before too long.
and now this--->
