Thanks aus9. I am using the NVIDIA drivers from experimental now but the silly thing is I don't have to as my GT 640 is a fairly old card now -- I just use them because I can. It was back when I bought my 9800GTX I used the binary as I didn't know enough to use experimental (though to be fair the driver probably made it to Sid not long after I got the card).
I've compiled my own kernel a few times but since Sid's tracking 3.11 now I don't really feel the need to do so at the moment. I might take a look at liquorix some time though -- I keep seeing it mentioned but haven't looked into it.

no worries I run 32 bit as 2G RAM
Code:
uname -a
Linux box 3.11-9.dmz.1-liquorix-686 #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Sat Nov 23 16:56:53 UTC 2013 i686 GNU/Linux

dmesg | grep NVIDIA
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 331.20 Wed Oct 30 16:59:55 PDT 2013
I should update more often but I use fsarchiver so restore image before updating
