Finally, I succeeded! My wife "likes Linux!"

Tonight, I am happy.

While I don't quite know if this is the proper forum for the small tale I am about to relate, I trust that the mods will rejoice in the news and/or move things around to fit correctly in this virtual jigsaw puzzle. Now, with tongue firmly in cheek, here is my story.

I've used Linux in extremely small dribbles and drabs for years, but only recently Installed it on my computers. One (old) computer is strickly Slackware, while the other is Windows XP and Slackware/Sabayon/SuSE (hmm - all "S" Linuxes . . . just noticed) where the modem and printer is installed.

So, to make a long story short, dial-up is quicker in any of the Linuxes, plus the games and the like are more interesting. More "choice" is there, too. I taught my wife how to log in, find the Internet, run Firefox, and the like.

Well, over the last month or so, she had been telling me that she has seen a few Linux bumper stickers on cars or hearing about it at work. Tonight, out of the blue, she tells me, "I like Linux," and proceeds to hog the computer and make me wait to play with my own box.

Hmmmmm. . . maybe this "evangelizing" thing worked a little too well.

Next target - my mother. Very hard sell. She hated Mandrake 7.2, so I don't know......

Wish me luck in similar success.

Great news. Getting everyday users onto free software makes a real difference as they are the hardest to convert but have the most impact (group size).

Great post polarbear! I wished I had more success.

I have a multiboot situation where I am regularly changing operating systems. This upsets my wife. I do try to keep one permanent one but you know how it is. A few months pass and a new version is available I just have to install.

I have user accounts setup in all of them for her. I try to setup everything for her beforehand but she gets upset if she cannot find something or something does not work.

She regularly sneaks into windows despite my warnings of virus in email. My windows install is rarely used thus never changes and she likes that.

I told her windows will never be replaced with windows once it crashes.

She really took to Sabayon, but it died on me, and she still asks for it. I guess I'll wait for a newer and more stable version and put it back for her. Then I have to leave it alone!

Hear, hear! Now about that "she gets upset" part - well, *I* get upset when something doesn't work. As far as Windows and email viruses, just install an on-access scanner and make the system even more slow, while your Linux side is still zippy. That way you will wean her slowly (pun intended - sorry) off Windows.

And, as far as Sabayon goes, I'm using it right now. I have discovered that it is very picky about free disk space, so try Sabayon again and be certain to keep enough disk space available.

Good advice Polarbear.

I have Elive installed where Sabayon had been. I think she likes the look of it. Its all about the eye candy for the ladies ... lol.

I think Sabayon swallowed up a good 9 gigs of hard drive.
