Don't Buy Partition Magic, Save Money!

I honestly think a moderator needs to make this a sticky thread or w/e it is called. I feel sorry for all these people saying, if you want to keep your existing Windows, you need partition magic. Watch my step by step guide on how not to blow 50 odd bucks.

1) Download System Rescue CD, md5sum it and burn

2) Boot computer with disc in drive, at boot prompt type fb800

3) When it asks for a keymap, pick the corresponding number, or if it is a US QWERTY keymap, just hit enter here.

4) You will come to a bash prompt, type in run_qtparted.

5) Enjoy your new partition magic clone that doesnt mess up Windows and Linux installations like that piece of junk partition magic. PM also only supports ext2 and ext3 (oh, and swap of course), whereas qtparted includes support for that plus resierfs, xfs, jfs and I believe even BSD although I am not positive on that one.

Anyways, please make this a sticky thread so more people don't waste money.

Oh, btw, if you already have Knoppix, don't bother with System Rescue CD, QTParted should be on Knoppix.

One more piece of advice, when you are buying a program like Partition Magic, always try to find an open source alternative because they almost always work better.

Maybe you could polish it up and stick it with the tutorials.
It is very nice, I know a lot of people that would find it useful and it would be easier to find as well.

go here and look at some of the other tutorials and just type it up in the same format. You will have to just copy and paste into that window.
And give it an appropricate name of course.

As far as qtparted working on the ufs file system on freebsd. The version of qtparted that's on knoppix 3.3 didn't work. I just burnt knoppix 3.4 a couple of days ago and haven't had a chance to check it out, but I'm hoping it does partition the ufs filesystem. I'll find out this weekend.

Go to knopper.net as Knoppix v 3.6 is already out.

Great advice, but I've always recommended that people use TeraByte's software, BootIt. It works like a dream for me, and I've used it many times (>=10) without a single hitch. Not open source, but great software for a trial usage.

I defiantly recommend parted and qt_parted instead of partition magic. The sysresccd is ultimately helpful (partition magic 8.0 is 50 MB for a single program, sysreccd is a complete OS on 100 MB approx).

I just used it yesterday. Sysrecue CD has the added advantage that it doesn't mount any partition so you have complete peace of mind.

I don't know whether knoppix does the same.
