configure: error: No ar utility found

i did a google search online and found nothing about this, so i figured i'd post it here in case i (or anyone else for that matter) came across it again. while compiling Berkeley DB 4.3 on a Red Hat 9 minimal install system, i got the following errors:

checking for ar... missing_ar
configure: error: No ar utility found

apparently all i needed to do was install the rpmutils package, and no more problems. i think the only reason i even had problems in the first place is because i had done a minimal install of the OS.

I came across this post when searching for an answer to the same problem. I kept getting the same error installing sleepycat db on Fedora Core1. The "No ar utility" error was resloved by installing "binutils" (yum -y install binutils).
