Returning to the Linux world

I was a long-time Unix user until 8 years ago - now I am just getting back into it ... on Linux this time, using SUSE 10.0, and looking forward to brushing up on my skills :-)

Welcome Back!

I really like Suse, don't get me wrong, just wondering why you didn't go Slack?

From slackware.com:

Quote:
The Slackware Philosophy
Since its first release in April of 1993, the Slackware Linux Project has aimed at producing the most "UNIX-like" Linux distribution out there. Slackware complies with the published Linux standards, such as the Linux File System Standard. We have always considered simplicity and stability paramount, and as a result Slackware has become one of the most popular, stable, and friendly distributions available.

It was just fate - I tried Debian first (very dissapointed in the quality of the install and initial "feel") and then SUSE was next on the list and was very pleased with it - except I am having trouble getting a post-installation internet connection (dhcpcd hangs waiting for a response, yet my LinkSys router sees the request, or part of it at least, and assigns a dhcp ip address - just no hostname even though dhcpcd sends one).

Such is life - we wouldn't learn anything if everything went off without a hitch ;-)

It's always fate, isn't it? I tried Debian myself, briefly. I think I squeezed it inbetween installing Mandriva and Suse. If I didn't use Slackware, I would probably go back to Suse.

On your internet problem, it seems that if your router sees the request, it must mean your network interface is active. That is strange, indeed. Does it show up in ifconfig?

I don't think this is related, but I've always shown up in my Linksys router, as having an IP, but no hostname. Hasn't ever bothered me, because it has always worked. I'm using wireless, though.

Just a stab, maybe it has a default hostname, and your router is just struggling to assign it a new one??? Don't know much in that department. Maybe a quick read of man hostname in your console.
