I got Ubuntu Jaunty when my hard drive with Windows XP crashed (well, what do you expect, huh?
) but I guess that how most of us got here, isn't it? I consider myself a self-taught intermediate penguin man... well, self-taught if you count using the forums and various online materials as "self taught."
As a brief intro to my first experience with the whole "root/sudo" thing that I'm sure fellow ex-windows users -- or still current windows users, since I use it for games... wine just doesn't cut it for newer games -- I was first given knoppix by my friend, since it's supposedly the most "windows friendly." I quickly found out that "windows friendly" is not the same as "user friendly" (whod'a thunk, right?). I couldn't get online!!!!!
I thought it was just incompatible with my ethernet software, but searching through the help documentation, I figured I had to become this entity called "root" SOMEHOW -- at this point I'm thinking, I OWN THIS COMPUTER, WHY DO I NOT HAVE SUPREME ULTIMATE POWER LIKE IN WINDOWS??!!! I found out later there's a reason for that, but naturally I was frustrated.
Then I got Ubuntu, and life was a breeze. I could do the basics like get online and make use the word processor without even bothering with "sudo." But naturally I wanted to explore how this program works and how I can coustomize it to my needs.
I LOOOOOOOVE the applet things and multiple panels I can make on the MULTIPLE DESKTOPS!!! -- YAY -- and the keyboard shortcuts I can set to run anything and do anything I want. I wish windows had that -- to an extent, it does, but it's complicated.
My distro is currently Ubuntu Jaunty, but my icons are coustomized KDE style. They just look cooler to me.
Had a tough time getting firefox 3.5.2 on here -- THANK YOU MAKERS OF UBUNTUZILLA!!!! -- And my suggestion to Ubuntu would be to make firefox 3.5.2 & up as part of their canonical updates.
Anyway, glad to be a part of this community, and I'm already gonna post my first question here in a sec. Thanks.
