wireless network says its connected, but internet doesn't load (knoppix)
Hello all, Im quite a beginner when it comes to linux, even more so when it comes to networking. I downloaded knoppix the other day in the hopes that it would detect my network cards and connect me to the internet, so I could do the alternate gentoo install via knoppix:
Alright, I boot up knoppix, everything is fine. I start the kwlan manager. I don't know what a WPA supplicant is, but it says to choose a driver so I choose the one that says ndiswrapper(something like taht, sorry!) the kwlan manager scans and finds my wireless network. I type in my WEP and it says its connected, but when I go to the internet it says the page can't be found (using www.google.com and knoppix website.) I try more than one wpa driver and I get rid of the WEP, and it still can't load a webpage. Does anyone have any advice or ideas? Id love to hear them!

The first thing is disable any security on the router. No wep, wpa,wpa2, mac or ip filtering. Then with ndiswrapper you use the windows inf driver to interface with it. Have not used Knoppix in a while not sure if it already has a list of card infs to work with.
This site's wiki has a section on configuring wireless including using ndiswrapper. You will want to visit the ndiswrapper wiki and look for your wireless model. Download the driver they recommend and use the ndiswrapper command to wrap the driver. Also make sure you install the ndiswrapper kernel module and the wpa_supplicant and wireless tools package.
The iwlist command will tell you if the device is working. You want to see if you can scan for wireless networks. You don't need to have the authentication part working for that. You do need to authenticate with your wireless network to get an IP address via DHCP however. So there are three steps you need to do in order:
1) Get the device working.
2) Authentication
3) Configure the network (dhcp, or static IP values for interface, gateway, DNS, etc.)
