but the proxim chipset is different then the original chipset and I have an 802.11b not a or g so I dont think the atheros will work, this chipset is HERMES 2.
roast,
When you say Atheros driver works do you mean that you can connect to a wireless accesss point or do the drivers just load with out complaining?
First question, are you guys sure this is a HERMES 2 chipset? I suspect this is a new Agere chipset. I'm running Slackware 9.0. I've tried the latest orinoco_cs driver, with no luck.
Snip:
cardmgr[54]: unsupported card in socket 0
cardmgr[54]: product info: "Agere Systems", "Wireless PC Card Model 0111", "", ""
cardmgr[54]: manfid: 0x0156, 0x0003 function: 6 (network)
It works great under Windows 98se with netstumbler 0.3.30
The netstumbler forum users are reporting that this is a completely new card hardware wise. It would be cool if someone could let us in on just what exactly is different so we dont go wasting time trying to get drivers working for it.
If you are still working on this card I obtained a beta driver from proxim yesterday. I put it on my site, www.greenblaze.com . Fair warning this is a beta driver. I tried installing it on rhat 9 and it installed fine, but it killed my pcmcia service. When I try to start pcmcia modprobe cant locate pcmcia_core.o, yenta_socket.o, or ds.o. I'm going to try again today with a fresh install. (no, I didn't really try to fix it) When I talked with tech support at proxim they said it was a hermes II chip set in the thing, which goes along with the other posts. If you try this let me know how it goes. I plan on posting the good, the bad and the ugly on my site and I will be checking here as well. Of all the postings this one seems the most promising.
Here is some more info I got about the driver. This came again from proxim support, which I might add was very prompt with responding to the e-mail I sent to them. I actually directed it to the person who sent me the driver so I'm sure that helped.
"I haven’t tried any sniffers yet, so I don’t have a definitive answer, however, I would imagine that promiscuous mode wouldn’t be available in the drivers, so I don’t believe they will work. I’ll have to try it sometime. There is a known issue in that driver using the 8410 or the older ORiNOCO Gold/Silver cards and using the drivers in Access Point mode (where the card acts like an access point, not connects onto an access point) where this feature doesn’t work too well. Although this doesn’t affect your ability to use the older or new cards in connecting onto a wireless network, the engineers don’t want to release the driver with that problem. If you look at the README’s, you’ll notice that these drivers have been beta for a long time. I’m hoping that a final release will be soon, and it seems like it would be, but I haven’t received any updated information on a release, so I’m not 100% sure."
So maybe if anyone out there is into writing drivers or patches this card could be used w/kismet or AirSnort. But until then those applications appear to be off limits.
Hmmm...Interesteing. I accually have 2 Orinoco cards, and am new to wireless networking. The cards I have are:
Proxim/Orinoco 802.11a/b Combo Card Gold
Lucent Technologies/Orinoco 11 Mbit/s Silver (With jack for external antenna). I haven't attempted to get either one installed under Red Hat 9.0 on my HP Pavilion 5190 Laptop yet. The card I really want to use under Linux is the Silver card. What driver should I attpemt to use?
I would say to pop the card in and try it. If it’s an "original" Orinoco card then when you put it in you should get the two happy beeps and be on your way. If it doesn't work at first do some troubleshooting and make sure that you have everything else in place first. If everything looks good then go ahead and use the beta drivers. I don't know how long the hermes II chipset has been in use so depending on how old your cards are you may or may not have to use the beta driver.
I popped the Silver card in, but got the following when trying to activate it in the redhat-config-network:
Cannot activate nework device eth1!
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument.
Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported.
Determining IP information for eth1...iptables: No chain/target/match by that name failed
iptables: Bad rule (does a matching rule exist in that chain?)
