Building a linux Wi-fi hotspot

Hi there,

im looking at building a wifi hotspot where users can come along with there laptop etc and connect onto the network.
but i dont want any body to be able to have access so i need users to be authenticated with the server before they are allowed to browse away on the net. id like to this to conist of them coming to front desk and asking fro a user and password and not being able to fill in a online form to gain access.

Does any body know of a way for this to be done, of cource using a linux gateway.

im looking to plug an AP into a gateway server and have gateway do all the authentication of wireless clients or so.

hope makes sense
thx for help
rob
