VIRTUALBOX: How to install MS Windows 10 and let think Windows that it is a real harddisk?

Hello,

If you run Virtualbox + MS Windows 10 OS, the system MS Windows will see, that it is on Virtual Machine.

It works, but half of features of Microsoft Office are available.

How to let think MS Windows 10 that it is a real harddisk (sda) ?

Running on Debian stable.

Best regards

I guess you cannot do that. At first windows can recognize not only the hard disk, but other parts of the virtualized environment too. From the other hand there is no way to change it, or (at least) you need to know virtualbox well enough to make it simulate the hardware better.

But it is definitely not related to virtualbox at all. Maybe you have downloaded/installed the free version.

Yeah, per the poster above, you must have installed a trial version. I use office in a VM all the time. It works the same as on a physical machine.

Hi Rkelsen,

- Full version of course.

- Can you with Teams to create a new session/link?
Could you try. Does it work, or you may land in Skype only.

You can use a physical disk.

Not really. Windows (and any other OS) will detect the type of the hardware and will use the appropriate driver for that. So in a VM they can detect only the virtualized hardware and can use the driver for that. A driver for real disk cannot work with that virtual disk, therefore faking it will make it useless. Probably you can connect the VM directly to the real disk, it is described here: https://www.serverwatch.com/guides/u...virtualbox-vm/ (for example)

But as it was already explained: the MS license does not depend on it.

You need type 1 hypervisor e.g. KVM (linux kernel). Qemu is type 2 hypervisor so is vbox or vmware.
Best type 1 hypervisor is Qubes OS in my opinion.
Anyway, with type 1 hypervisor windows will have access to bare metal.

It was already posted (how can the VM access the disk directly from vbox).

windows will still recognize that VM is used, so whatever VM limitations will still apply.
