What version VirtualBox? Which VirtualBox product? The OSE edition does not include USB support.

First, make sure you are in the vboxusers group, then make your primary group root. That worked for me.

Which edition? Or, how did you install it?

Have you installed the Guest Additions. I believe that you need to do that before the USB devices work seamlessly.

Several possible solutions are discussed in this LQ thread.

What is your host OS?

With Ubuntu 10.04 you need to do three things (I've just tested it)
  1. Add your user that is running the host to the vboxusers group (you may need to log out and back in to pick up these settings)
  2. Add the USB device to the guest machine through the VBox manager
  3. Fire-up the guest OS and you should see that the USBs are active

For USB discs (flash drives, hard discs etc) you may need to eject the device from the host to allow the guest to see it. Only plug them back in once you are in the guest OS
