Trouble with qemu command syntax

I'm trying to build a VM using qemu-kvm. I've successfully created a qcow2 disc image, but am having a problem finding the proper command syntax to point it at an iso file on my hard drive and get it started. I'm running Slackware -current if that makes any difference.

You use "-hda" for the qcow2 image and "-cdrom" for the iso image. Type the entire path for both qcow2 and iso images.

I tried this:

Code:
qemu-system-x86_64 -hda /home/vms/slack_disk.img -cdrom /home/gene/src/slackware64-13.1-iso/slackware64-13.1-install-dvd.iso -boot d -m 1024
Got a black screen with some white lines on it. Had a cursor but couldn't do anything with it. I had to ctrl-alt-f6 to get out. What did I do wrong?

I'm still getting the same problem with the following command:

Code:
qemu-system-x86_64 -hda /home/vms/slack_disk.img -m 1024 -net user -net nic,model=e1000 -vga std -cdrom /home/gene/src/slackware64-13.1-iso/slackware64-13.1-install-dvd.iso -boot d
Can anyone advise?

you can create an iso image file on your cdrom using dd command
dd if=<dev of cdrom> if=/tmp/name.iso
