wpeckham hi and thank you for the link.
i'v been thinking about taking void-base.iso and adding a script to install void-base and a script to install openbox.
eggs hasn't been ported to void yet and probably never will.
as far as eggs, i can create the egg but the install isn't right. or it could be Debian 12 all the kinks aren't worked out yet.

The eggs source is over here https://github.com/juanvasque/penguins-eggs and you can compile it on any complete Linux platform with the development libraries and tools available. Void should qualify.
As for creating and installing an egg, I recommend the use of calamares installer. I also find installing from a Ventoy easier than directly from media, and this also avoids the step of burning your ISO to media. Getting everything right should be easy, but I find it picky and less than intuitive. IT is still an amazing tool for the job, once you get things right.
For your specific case, the use of the image tools might serve you better. I have not tried that technique myself, but comments and report are good. As long as you preserve the original Qemu guest you can always try multiple times until you get it right.
taking void-base.iso and adding a script to install void-base and a script to install openbox
Assuming the void-base.iso is used for installing Void.
1st thing I would do is burn the void-base.iso to a USB stick with Rufus selecting copying ISO contents to the USB.
Now one can add the scripts and packages and test your custom contraption by booting it and run it to see if you got it right, if not, power down and keep trying till ya get the desired results.
Then learn how to edit the original ISO or create a Linux live with the contents of the USB. I imagine squashfs will be involved since that appears to be the proper method of creating a bootable Linux ISO.
ADDED:
Most Linux installers run a small striped down OS. In the ISO file it should be a squashfs file, need to edit that file if the changes you want to make are within the Installer OS. Maybe un-squash, edit, re-squash?
