issue with installing hyper-v role on a 2008x64 virtualbox vm on ubuntu64 host

i currently have ubuntu64 installed on my laptop and im using virtualbox to setup numerous vm's. one of the vm's im running is 2008 r2 x64.

virtualization is enabled in bios on the host and virtualbox automatically enables VT-x/AMD-V for the 2008x64 vm. i have also changed the vm's cpu count to 2.

2008 r2 x64 has installed without any issues but when i try to add the hyper-v role it tells me the cpu is not compatible. its already enabled in bios and in the vm settings so im not sure what else to check

any ideas?

Hi,

Which VM are you using for Virtualization and can you tell me the reason why you are using Windows Hyper-v in your Virtualized Environment ?

im using ubuntu64 as the host OS as i need a 64bit host to be able to add hyper-v

the virtual software im using virtualbox.

the virtual machines are being used as part of training for 2008 AD. first of all i needed a machine running 2008x64 so that went into the first vm. when i try to add the hyper-v role, which is just an activity of installing/adding roles, its says i cant because the processor doesnt support virtualization

i know that it does as im already running a vm and its enabled in bios. its also enabled in the vm settings (be default) so the only thing i can think of is that it doesnt like being added within a vm. not a limitation i would have expected though with the amount of virtualization is todays world

hope this helps you help me

Hi,

I think you 2008 R2 is not sencing the VT Technology in Virtual CPU. Install VMware GSX Server in ubuntu and try to install Hyper-V in 2008 R2.

You can Download it From VMware site and one more Vmware's Linux based Harden OS Available for Virtualization named VMware ESXi server. GSX is Free software for ubuntu and ESXi server is paid vertion but you can download 30 days trial version from vmware's site.

turns out you cant run hyper-v inside a vm, a vm inside a vm if you will

it needs to run natively
