No idea why you'd think ram would be an issue at all here. What does it lose a connection to? If there's no NIC then how can it create one in the first place? Maybe the nic you're adding isn't compatible with the installer..? tried a different type? virtio nics would be the best (as I understand them) but they are largely developed for redhat, so no idea about Ubuntu's support for the virtual hardware they provide.

No. I mean KVM is probably a better option for you, but *AFAIK* the issues you seem to have are not actually about the virtualization. The peripheral IO devices are separately part of QEMU, which is mostly common to both Xen and KVM. KVM is certainly a lot simpler and the virtualiation will either work or not, much less vague, more "binary". As long as your CPU supports it, which is probably should these days.

well, if ubuntu doesn't work, where other distros do, this becomes quite straightforward

It may have been something with network card. Using "Shared physical device" instead of virtual, it works !

Thanks :-)

I take that as a point for me...

I would not want to stay using a shared device. You may find that once installed there are more opportunites to support the virtual device, so try flipping back after a full upgrade and have a look.
