Post ESXi 5.5. and Ubuntu 14.04.3: networking disconnected at initial install and boot

Hi All,

I'm running ESXi 5.5 on a Dell PowerEdge (home server style). When I setup Ubuntu 14.04.X, the default is that it cannot connect to the network. As soon as I'm booted from the ISO and the install process dialog boxes begin, it notes that there is no internet connection. I can't figure out why this is, especially since other Linux distros (namely Fedora) don't seem to have this issue.

If I run through the install process and get to the main desktop (now installed), the Network manager shows the connection ("Wired 1") as disconnected. When I try to connect it, it tries for abut 5 minutes and then fails.

On the VM side, I've tried both the VMXnet3 and the E1000 network "cards." The host itself is connected via Ethernet to the one network, and the host and other VMs connect to the internet just fine. I've had this behavior on both Ubuntu 14.04.1 and .3.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Maybe select a different virtual nic or diag the virtual nic support in client.
