Disk extend or add new virtual drive is better on VMs?

Hello,

I would like to ask is there any different (except that it will be sda2 or sdb) on VMs when I expand the current disk or add a new virtual one (for LVM for example)? I see the only downside of current disk expand is the shutdown/restart of the VM what is needed. Is there any else?

Thank You

If you have LVM properly configured, no contest - just add a new disk and do pvcreate on the entire disk; don't partition it. In future you can easily increase it online.

I'd say that it depends upon what you're doing exactly, and what flexibility you may need down the track.

Eg: With a second disk, you could detach it and reattach it to a different VM. This could be handy if you're hosting a file share or something.
