help me in User profile reset.

My name is Rahul Kumar.one user change his display sitting in his user login ,Now he is not able to login now,when he try to login his linux desktop is showing black icons only ? Nothing is visiable at user login ? While root user is login sucessfuly at same linux pc & his desktop is working fine. Tell me how can i reset user profile without data lose? user is used to save data at his desktop & home folder ?

What distribution of linux is he using? Perhaps you should also post this question to a forum specifically dealing with that particular distribution.
