zlib installed but can't be found

I'm trying to compile a program that calls zlib, unfortunately I get a command not found (I'm using SLES 11 64-bit). Typing 'zlib' from a command prompt gives 'command not found', I've tried installing zlib-devel from an RPM (for some reason this isn't an install option in YaST) but this didn't help. Adding an alias for either of the zlib so files gives 'segmentation fault'. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm unsure of what you're doing. Why would you type zlib on a command prompt. It's not an executable program. What does the program you are compiling ask for spcifically?

The packages zlib-1.2.3-106.34 , zlib-devel-1.2.3-106.34
can be installed from the SLES 11 install DVD.

'zlib' is always installed, so you'd just need the -devel files.
