LANG=en_US.ISO-8859-15

of course change 'en and 'US' to your language and variant

to start applications from xterm with this setting:

export LANG=en_US.ISO-8859-15

and to use this setting for every time you're in bash:
$HOME/.profile LANG=en_US.ISO8859-15
