Xmpp VOIP not working Lin|Win connection, ICE failure. (also some actual questions)

Consistently while trying out some Jabber voip software (since skype has proven itself to be quite poopy in 64 bit) with my not yet migrated to Linux friend(mint 10/ubuntu 10.10 had installation problems), when we noticed that no connection was being made between the clients (IM/fileshare worked alright) With Each client ( Pidgin, Empathy, and Jitsi on my end/ just jitsi on the other, will test with Spark later) each time bringing up "ICE error" or "ICE failure" on either end. Is this a problem with Jitsi, or does XMPP require port forwarding of some type, like SIP?

Slightly unrelated question: How does skype work without port forwarding/ firewall configuration and why hasn't this method been implemented into some other methods of PC based VOIP
