Unhappy xine gets no sound in gnome

I am running mandrake 10 on a asus mobo with a built in nforce 2 sound card. kernel ver. 2.6.3-7. using gnome ver. 2.4 when i start xine from the gui and start a dvd i get no sound at all (Yes I have libdvdcss installed) but when i start xine from the terminal I get perfect sound. I am very preplexed. I couldn't find anything on google, and ive never run into a problem like this before. Its not really a huge problem just kindof annoying. thanks for your help

Is there a difference between how you start Xine from the terminal and how you start it from a Gnome shortcut?

did you check if xine uses alsa driver for playing sound ? you must be the "master of known universe" instead of "beginner" in xine. try to specify /dev/dsp for the "alsa_default_device" in the audio panel and "alsa" as driver.
and listen...
