I'm glad you asked. There is only one that comes to mind that is more important than the users apps most might focus on.

What we want is:

A
U N I V E R S A L
D I S T R O
A P P L I C A T I O N S
I N S T A L L E R

Let me repeat:

A
U N I V E R S A L
D I S T R O
A P P L I C A T I O N S
I N S T A L L E R

BTW, contrary to the comment on the previous page virtually none of the programs that are listed in this thread were ported from linux or were used to clean up windows messes. That's a fantasy to think that.

walrus121,

UT 2003 and 2004 are excellent games for linux. Army Ops is done by the US Army (heh, to what end?) and I don't like it much. Super-tux sucks. Enemy Territory is a cool game.

There are many games out there that will run on linux but it takes alot of work to figure out how to get them set up, and hence a universal installer is really needed. Without it, no commercial venture with a reputation is going to want to provide their software and have to put up with the support nightmares.

To solve alot of these problems (for any category of software) a universal installer is a MUST.

By far (by a vast distance), does the Windows world shame the Linux world in gaming. No one can honestly repute that. So, yeah there is a big need and demand for games. One can't equate the few games available (and let's dump the 20,000 mahjongg/solitare/tetris/mine field clone games from this equation) to those found in the Windows (and Mac) worlds. Some of the best will never come over because of the lack of central focus on how the distro's are setup.

Linux has and needs an anti-virus program. To attempt to pursuade others that it isn't necessary is akin to asking them to commit computer suicide in the next few years. There's going to be so many problems with viruses on linux in the future that to not prepare now is justification to stay with Windows.

As for defragmentation. All file systems inherit this problem, every one. Some to a greater degree and some to a lesser but they all have the problem and hence the demand.

Jeremy

I think this thread should be culled, it might be a good "user survey" and it's result might be that some
more useless programs will be created and many folks will spend hours testing/installing/deleting/curing
I think the effort will be much more fruitful if you started a thread

"WHICH PROGRAM WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE FIXED" (so that they at least work at 80% functionality)

IMHO currently basic Kernel is the only stable thing.
Apps are at about 10% or lower functionality (some out of the box, some for their overall value).

Every App is slow as a dog.

sorry if it's been said already, but reading the 57 pages of this thread was a bit much to me.

I've been longing for some software such as Total Commander (ex Windows Commander), by Ghisler (ghisler.com - it's the name of the dure who made it).

this is one app I never had anything to complain about (well.. with early versions yes, but since then, new functions always came before I could think of it - and god knows how picky I am with software)

Reasonable priced apps:
ACT (contact management for business)
DesignCAD 3D
Eudora
Namo WebEditor
Paint Shop Pro
Pinnacle Studio (bundled with hardware)
Steinberg Cubasis
WinFax
More software for digital content creation (DCC)

Educational and non-commercial (they're not the same):
Personal Learning Editions of Maya and Studio (only available for Win32) besides Maya is already ported

And of course games:
(This is were I add Blizzard games, but no, there is WineX)
Need for Speed
Tomb Raider
Splinter Cell
More great native games like Neverwinter Nights with multi-monitor support

More multimedia:
NVIDIA NDVD (even if it is not free, even better if it is bundled with new hardware)

Most of the other software I use is already ported or has a commercial grade equivalent. Please note I made these recommendations with a production environment in mind and not only for me. Remember, not everyone is a geek (like us...) and small businesses does not have a lot of resources for IT staff and support personnel.

I'd like that, too, but Microsoft has their hands in Sony's pockets. Nowhere has Sony had anything to do with open source software, and I doubt that is going to change anytime soon.

I dunno, if it is already discussed in this forum.

A complete CD/DVD burning software will be of great use. I dunno any such software is existing already.

With gnome toaster and CD-Writer in KDE., I am able to make exact copy of disk and also burn data cd.

But cutting a VIDEO CD/DVD or an audio cd, i think is not possible with those softwares.

If there is someway kindly let me know. Also making exact copy is not that simple.

If there is some good software for these jobs., let me know. If there is no such software, developing one such software will help alot.

I tried using nero CD burner through wine. It also failed.

umm...
3ds max has a linux/irix version just like A/W's Maya and Softimage.
Softimage is the only one that sells a retail box of theirs, although it's release is a couple weeks off.
the other two you have to contact a sales rep, but trust me, they exist. all 3d apps have had to run on SGI's and Sun platforms since their inception.

Softimage XSI already has a linux version of their PLE equivalent (XSI | EXP)

I'd personally prefer to see AutoCAD go back to unix.
i know they fired their unix division after r13, but with linux emerging as the dominant unix,
PLEASE can the go back?
