Try gentoo &/or Debian.
In gentoo the installation process is very simple and reliable. All you have to do is to type: emerge {and the name of the program you want to install.
e.g. emerge gimp
Beside this, all you have to do is to wait unil Gentoo downloads the source of the program. Then it will configure, compile and install it for you.
Really hard, right?

@others: if you want to become linux master, the first step is to delete windows, exept if you have a strong reason not to do so. I live w/o windows for 3 months so far & I'm raeally heppy about this.
Feel the power DELETE windows.

only easy if what you want installed comes ready made for gentoo.
Really, everything I need that a package manager can give me is just another version of what I already have. I really don't need four different web browsers.
If you can get empirepoker, gammon empire, and my lexmark x5250 all to work on linux, then I can be persuaded to delete windows. I realise that these are all problems that are no fault of linux. Can't expect reverse engineering to be perfect.

Grant grider, if you WERE talking about getting the ready made linux programs, there are easier ways to install than using command line. I don't know what distro you're running, so I don't know what is available to you, but I like using synaptic and automatix. you might also try adept and klik. google these to find out more.

I got synaptic by opening konsole and typing sudo apt-get install synaptic. and when I got that, i typed sudo synaptic. After that a window opened up and installing additional applications only required clicking the mouse.

Yes ,the forum was about programs people would like to see in linux.I have installed ubuntu and have a hard drive switch to change between windows and linux. But,a program such as auto install as in windows, would be the differance between a few people useing linux, and everyone makeing use of linux.I am ignorant of linux ----totally---but--would like to leave windows behind. For instance,I have spent the better half of the dat trying to install real player .It would be a lot better if one had a auto install program. As for other software ,it would be nice if there was a distibution that had real player ,flashplayer, and other basics. Also ,to have a program ,with distribution that would run mac or ms software on puttting in a disk.-----total rookie

This is a work under Progress. But I think you may check out:

Autopackage.org

There are not many packages available at this point of time, but they are working on newer and newer softwares.

automatix

grant grider, I have your solution. I was you about a week ago, and now i'm you plus this program:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=66563

I still know practically nothing about linux, but I can now do all those things you mentioned above, and more. I wish I had found this sooner. Spread the word, everybody! This program saves new Ubuntu users like nothing else can!

just a note regarding the above link. this will direct you to a place to get automatix. the directions for cut&paste command line stuff is wrong on one point. the beerorkid part came up on my machine as 404 not found or something like that. after a little googling and intuitive guesswork, I changed beerorkid to beerorchid and it worked fine. (this may be distro specific, so the link might not be wrong after all. just with my distro I had to use beerorchid. if you experience troubles, try this.)

Eudora, by Qualcomm. (E-mail client. I know Linux has many fine offerings... but I like Eudora!)

IMHO, Evolution is the best! There is no feature I need that Evolution doesn't have.

I tried to switch to evolution from Thunderbird. I love evolution's calendar, tasks and integration with Gnome desktop. However I found it very bulky (using about 150-200M to keep it running)

Also I found that evolution doesn't handle css html e-mail very will. Not to mention there is no spell check on send so I was always sending things with spelling mistakes.

Over all I like the product but just can't totally switch over.

I guess it really comes down to preference and what you really use

For voice and WebCam support for yahoo messenger you can try gyach :
1. Download http://www.politicalcrossfire.com/te...nstall.tar.bz2 , and save it to your home directory (important!).

2. Run these commands in the terminal, in sequential order:
Code:

tar -xjf gyach-install.tar.bz2
cd gyach
sudo ./install

gaim-vv is another choice

SonicStage - then I can finally use my MP3 player with Linux and do not have to boot into MS Windows. Already tried to install it under CrossOver Office but got some strange error messages.

dear all,
I am a person still using windows and very scared to shift to linux. I am an architect that uses Autocad,3DS-MAX, photoshop, image ready, indesign, ms office and a couple other ms, and imagery software. I have heard that an office software has been created in linux and working beautifully. that is great news, but is there a software that can work on like autocad( 2d & 3d),and another software like 3DS-MAX for animation and rendering? or is there a software that can make those programs work a linux. please help I would like to shift from windows but still afraid to make the move because i haven't seen anything that can help me make the move, and change will take time end effort... is it woth it?

Hi alhabi, I am a structural enginer and have worked for Archchitects since the late 40s and in the past used AutoCAD, MicroStation & DesignCAD. Was a developer for MicroStation in fact. I moved to Linux about 3 or 4 years ago.
I have found a couple programs that show promise "k3d" and "Qcad" (2d for now), there are saveral others that lean toward "modleing". Blender( available in windows also ), KPovModeler & Wings3d. In addtion there are some commercial progams. ( I don't use them on principal )
http://www.linuxcad.com/
http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html
I am progamming now so havn't had a chance to explore these programs in depth.

Linux is like a breath of fresh air, but I suggest you get linux on a backup computer. (Ubunty/Kubuntu is a good choice for a linux distro). Don't jump until you know where you are going. Good Luck.
