[SOLVED] What is this error in syslog?

I have been given an old Acer Extensa 5235 laptop and I successfully installed MX Linux.

I noticed on 3 occasions it showed a black screen in the middle of doing something, but the mouse pointer was still operational.

I can restart the machine and it appears to work completely normally, until the next cut out.

***Also, since I am not a regular reader of syslog files, how do I capture/copy ALL of the text output in Xfce terminal and not just a single screen's worth?

I have tried Shift + Ctrl + C, but this does not work.

I am probably going to scrap this machine because of this intermittent error, but your replies will add to my education.

PS It has just cut out for the 4th time after running perfectly for 45 minutes.

So what have you looked at to troubleshoot the issue, the last line seems fairly indicative of where the issue lies.

I tend to agree with TenTenths that the segfault (segmentation fault) is likely the issue. Unfortunately, the cause of segfaults is notoriously difficult to determine.

This article may help in monitoring log files in real time.

I suspected faulty RAM and I have run memtest for 16 hours (see attached screenshot).

It produced 24 errors, including 10 of them on Test 7.

I have some replacement RAM on order and hopefully that will do the trick.

The laptop currently has 1GB plus 2GB and I am going to fit 2 x 2GB.

Thanks for your helpful responses.

I will donate the machine to a local charity once the replacement RAM arrives.
