webapp does not start automatically in tomcat

In a Linux environment, I have a web application that does not start automatically. When I bring up the tomcat manager page, the running status for application shows false. I can manually start the application through the manager page with no problems.

My question is what do I need to look for to troubleshoot why the application does not start automatically?

Tomcat version 5.5.15
Operating System: Redhat 5 update 2

In a windows environment, my webapp starts automatically with no issues.

in tomcat directory:
check logs/catilina.out for any errors
checks conf/server.xml to see if autoDeploy and deployOnStartup are set to true
