Volume Control in Gnome

I just switched to the gnome gui and away from kde, and I will have to say that I am not sorry. Almost every problem I had in KDE is non existent in gnome. I have one problem though, whenever I try to use the system tray icon to adjust the volume it keeps jumping down to the bottom. When I select volume control from the menu it says there are no mixer devices found, but I have sound because if I play a media file or something else it works fine. I just want to be able to adjust the level of it. I'm running Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition. Suggestions anyone?

Try right-clicking the mixer icon on the toolbar and select 'open volume control'. Then play around with the controls (you can choose how many you can see and which ones are muted.

Then right-click again and choose 'Preferences' to make the slider reflect the option you want (e.g. 'volume' - for system volume - instead of 'speaker' - for the little speaker in your box)
