VLC seems a bit unstable in Debian 10 on MATE. Is there a way to make it more stable?
Sometimes when I close it using the X on the window border, it doesn't close and just shows a blank screen - I use xkill to force close it. When I'm in fullscreen, the screen can flicker when resizing, etc. Also for some odd reason, when the VLC window is not selected, the first letter of the video title is highlighted. [see image]
I don't have these issues with other video players (mpv, smplayer) on my system.
Do others have similar issues?
Thanks.

Try opening VLC from the terminal, to see what exactly's going on.
Usually when you run it via the terminal, it'll show some output like :
Quote:
$ vlc
VLC media player 3.0.2 Vetinari (revision 3.0.2-0-gd7b653cf14)
[000055fde2d7d1a0] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 2
QPainter::save: Painter not active
QPainter::setPen: Painter not active
QPainter::setBrush: Painter not active
In this case, I removed QPainter, to provide you with some sample output.

Hi Morgo.
Launching it:
Code:
VLC media player 3.0.8 Vetinari (revision 3.0.8-0-gf350b6b5a7)
[0000563174469570] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[00005631744fe240] main playlist: playlist is empty
Launching it and closing video file:
Code:
VLC media player 3.0.8 Vetinari (revision 3.0.8-0-gf350b6b5a7)
[0000563174469570] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[00005631744fe240] main playlist: playlist is empty
[00005631744fe240] main playlist: end of playlist, exiting
QObject::~QObject: Timers cannot be stopped from another thread
If I have a video running and VLC selected, if I take a screenshot of the desktop - the VLC video blinks and my screenshot is sometime black for what was on the VLC video (but fine for the rest of my desktop). If I pause the video and take a screenshot - it's always fine.
