VLC Fails To Play DVD

I got ubuntu 8.04. My issue is, VLC version 8.6.0 won't play DVD movies in DVD player. To play a movie, I got to go to FIle in the menu, then choose 'Open Disc'. Then, I click ok and the movie plays. This is the only way I can play DVDs in my DVD player.

How can I play a movie in the DVD drive just by clicking on the DVD icon on my desktop, or, by right-clicking on that icon and clicking 'Open with VLC' ?

Well wait, first you say VLC freezes when it tries to play a DVD, and then you say you want to associate DVDs with VLC so that is all the system will use?

So does VLC play DVDs currently, or not?

MS3FXX< thanks for the reply. I'll make it more clear. The obly way I can play a DVD in the DVD drive is by going to File > Open Disc then clicking OK. I can't open the DVD directly by roght-clicking on the DVD icon on my desktop and choosing 'Open with VLC'.

I want to be able to right-click on the DVD icon on the desktop and play it.
