there is that....
apart from that i think it's up to YOU to go through your thread and read again all that was requested and suggested, maybe you missed a few things.
btw, i'm not sure it's a good strategy to snap at the helping hand. just saying.
you're trolling, first that is not the standard repo list for Debian stable/stretch, you've added at least two other non debian repos, which makes one think this is an incomplete repo listing.... So yes, you have a frankendebian. a program did not just jump into your repo's without you adding something, Debian stable does not change program versions only security updates/patches.
I'm done with this thread, its reported as trolling now. Have fun.
You've got to be kidding me. Dude the only non-debian repos there are my third party apps, like Spotify. Just go way dude. All you're doing is assuming and insulting and I'm really not in the mood for it man. At least attempt to be constructive.

Ugh, LUTRIS is for video games. SPOTIFY is a music player.
That's what I was thinking, too, but now I'm not sure what to think.

Well, so far the only Stretch installation where I've had a problem with getting VLC to start was the one with only Openbox. I'm typing this post from Stretch (Xfce) -- fully updated as of today -- and VLC is working fine.
Code:
$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stretch-updates main contrib non-free
Code:
Kernel: 4.9.0-6-amd64
And, of course, it's vlc 3.0.2-0+deb9u1 amd64. Obviously, there's something happening on your system that is not happening here. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck!
....well I imagine it would purge remove VLC, do I really need to run that or will it's results really be in question?

What does the commandline return when you run 'vlc' from the terminal? Any errors?
Currently, this is what I'm getting, pretty sure I've posted the updated results here already recently, but I will repost since you're at least trying. When I run vlc, whether it's terminal or Alt+F2, a GIANT window appears, filling up both my workspaces, CPU goes up to +90%, there's some giant buttons visible. Screenshot attatched. Anyway here's the current terminal output, again.

Do you have another Stretch installation, on another partition or on another computer? Or can you try VLC from within a different DE or WM? I ask this because I have several installations, on several different computers, and I go back and forth between a number of different DEs/WMs, and so far I've seen a problem with VLC opening only on one of them (I took care of that with the "workaround" that I mentioned earlier in the thread). In my situation, that's what I'd do, though, I'd test it out on another system and see what happens.
well I imagine it would purge remove VLC, do I really need to run that or will it's results really be in question?
Well, if you really want to get rid of vlc that should certainly do it.
The only way I'd think that the results would be in question is if APT isn't doing it's job.
TO verify that vlc was removed is to check it with dpkg -L vlc.
That's a lot of dependencies and you have version 3.0.2.
The current version of vlc is 3.0.3-- See the link below for reverting back.
The only way that I can think of to revert back to the previous version is to run make uninstall but that's 'only if' you compiled vlc from src. Aside from that, I found this:

I can try it under IceWM, I have no other DEs or WMs installed, and do not wish to fatten up my system.
