usb printer installation

I compiled the kernel with 'usb support' and 'usb printer support', then I created /dev/usb/ and executed 'mknod /dev/usb/lp0 c 180 0'

what do I do next to get my printer working? I tried executing 'echo "test" > /dev/usb/lp0' but it didn't do anything.

There is currently no entries in my /etc/printcap file. Do I need to add something there? I don't have any utilities to add entries to it so I either have to get one or add them manually.

Unhappy

never mind. I figured out how to add what I needed to 'printcap' and it is working fine now.

Accually, I have more problems. My printer is working fine, I can print by executing 'echo "testing" > /dev/usb/lp0' and I can also print fine from gimp, but the 'lpr' command isn't printing ?? and it is used by many programs such as Abiword. Instead of printing, a whole bunch of blank pages just come out???? Does anyone have a clue?

I can't even begin to figure out this one. I don't know how any of this works.
Here are my printcap entries, maybe they need something else??

##PRINTTOOL## LOCAL stcolor 300x300 letter {}
ps:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/ps:\
:mx#0:\
:lp=/dev/usb/lp0:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/ps/filter:\
:sh:
##PRINTTOOL## LOCAL
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:lp=/dev/usb/lp0:\
:sh:

I used 'lpr -P lp' and it worked. 'lpr' doesn't seem to like the printer that was set up with a filter??
