tip on installing Virtualbox, "all distros" version: sh - the script, not the package

I just reinstalled Virtualbox after reinstalling my distro. I found out that I was supposed to install a shell script for the package, not the package. The first time I downloaded it, I did something wrong (I'm not sure what, but I think it was some simple error), and got the package instead of the shell script. I tried to sh - the package in a console, and it wouldn't work, saying there were syntax errors. Then I tried to sh - the shell script, and that installed Virtualbox.
