svgalib locks keyboard!

Whenever I run an svgalib program, whatever it may be, the keyboard becomes completely locked out. The mouse works, but the keyboard does nothing. I've tried everything I can think of with the config files, changed keymaps, etc. but it still happens. Not even caps lock or num lock - pressing them doesn't even light up the appropriate lights.
This is with the svgalib included in Slackware 8.0 (I can't remember the exact version number of svgalib).
With the older version included in Debian 2.2r5, everything worked fine.

Anyone have any ideas?
